Assignment 1 - group project
EXPERIENCING SPACE – SPATIAL TRANSLATION
Duration: 3 Weeks
Submission Requirements: A3 Presentation Panels, Models (Digital/Physical)
This study aims to explore how modifying elements influence the experience of dance movements through collaborative group work. By analyzing selected precedent studies, we were tasked to propose a spatial translation scheme in the form of semi-open architecture. Our designs will interpret and develop dance movements through narratives, incorporating modifying elements derived from two case studies.
After selecting a suitable location, the translation of dance movements will stem from a chosen narrative, developed to reflect spatial qualities influenced by "time" and "light & shadow" as modifying elements. Using a linear approach, we explored the spatial translation of dance movements informed by our narrative and observations.
The outcomes will include:
-
Precedent Study Analysis: Key insights into poetic and spatial qualities of dance movements.
-
Design Presentation: Semi-open architectural scheme developed through linear translation of movement.
-
Model Creation: Digital or physical models representing the translation of dance movements.
Through this process, we aim to identify and apply spatial qualities, bridging narratives with architecture and modifying elements to capture the essence of dance movements and enhance the spatial experience.
Assignment 2 - group project
EXPERIENCING SPACE – THE CHRONICLE AND VISCERAL TRANSLATION
Duration: 4 Weeks
Submission Requirements: A4 Canva-Book, A2 Visceral Board, Site Model
This project focuses on understanding and interpreting the essence of a site through the lens of dance movements. By conducting a detailed recce of the selected site and engaging with its physical and cultural context, we were tasked to develop spatial translations that synchronize the site’s "genius loci" with embodied experiences derived from dance movements.
The project consists of two main tasks:
-
The (Site) Chronicle:
-
Capture the physical and experiential essence of the site through data collection, photography, and analysis of dance-related cultural elements.
-
Investigate the connection between the site and dance movements, focusing on the narratives and spatial qualities inspired by local dance traditions.
-
Produce a detailed site model and a visually compelling Canva-Book to document findings and inform future design processes.
-
-
The Visceral:
-
Analyze the embodied experience of the site as influenced by selected dance movements.
-
Translate observations into diagrammatic and visual depictions of the site’s genius loci, emphasizing the poetic qualities of movement.
-
Present these interpretations on an A2 board, synthesizing the place and the experience of dance into a unified representation.
-
Outcomes:
-
Site Chronicle: Comprehensive documentation capturing the site’s essence, enriched by dance-inspired observations and narratives.
-
Visceral Board: A2 visual representation that translates site experiences into a poetic dialogue with movement.
-
Site Model: A physical depiction of the site’s genius loci, incorporating elements reflective of the relationship between movement and place.
This process deepens our understanding of how dance movements can shape spatial experiences, enabling us to create meaningful and poetic architectural responses.

Assignment 3 - Individual project
EXPERIENCING SPACE – RECLAIMED ARCHITECTURE: A DANCE ANNEXE
Duration: 15 Weeks
Submission Requirements: 6 A1 Presentation Boards, 1:100 Building Model, Sketches, and Precedent Study Journal
This project integrates the art of dance and architecture to design a Dance Annexe—a standalone building that preserves, promotes, and celebrates local native and contemporary dance cultures. By examining the interplay between movement, space, and site, the aim is to create a structure that embodies the essence of dance through spatial poetics and functional design.
The annexe, situated on reclaimed land in Malacca, will serve as an extension of Encore Melaka Theatre. It will act as a cultural hub for dance-related activities, offering spaces for performances, exhibitions, and community engagement.
Objectives:
-
Translate the essence of local dance movements into architectural forms that resonate with the site's genius loci.
-
Integrate choreography and spatial design to create a poetic, movement-responsive built form.
-
Ensure practicality, accessibility, and sustainability while maintaining an evocative architectural narrative.
Project Scope:
-
Design Development:
-
Develop a two-storey standalone structure with a total floor area of 350–450 sqm.
-
Incorporate spaces such as a dance hall, exhibition gallery, café, retail area, and poetic outdoor zones.
-
Include facilities for practice, performances, and cultural exchange, catering to both the public and dance communities.
-
-
Spatial Interpretation of Dance:
-
Use linear or concentric spatial arrangements inspired by local dance movements.
-
Emphasize user experience through materiality, lighting, and passive environmental design strategies.
-
Create spaces that reflect the rhythm, flow, and spirit of dance through poetic architectural gestures.
-
-
Final Deliverables:
-
Orthographic Drawings: Site plan, layout plans, elevations, sections, and sectional perspectives.
-
Physical Model: A 1:100 building model showcasing design details and site integration.
-
Visual Representations: Perspectives illustrating the relationship between movement, materiality, and spatial experience.
-
Design Considerations:
-
Practicality and functionality for dance activities.
-
Integration of cultural narratives and the spirit of the place (genius loci).
-
Use of sustainable materials and climate-responsive design.
-
Detailed construction strategies and innovative solutions to enhance user experience.
Outcomes:
-
A Dance Annexe: A community-focused architectural proposal that harmonizes with the site while celebrating dance as a cultural expression.
-
Poetic Spatial Experience: A design that translates the movements of dance into a tactile, visual, and emotional architectural journey.
-
Comprehensive Documentation: Detailed design drawings, models, and a narrative booklet articulating the creative process and cultural significance.
Through this project, we aim to create a structure that resonates with the rhythm and grace of dance, fostering a deeper connection between movement, space, and community.
